Frequently Asked Questions
What's the science behind nature-based education?
Time spent learning outdoors supports healthy brain development in powerful ways:
Improves focus and attention – Natural environments help restore attention and reduce mental fatigue.
Supports emotional regulation – Outdoor play lowers stress and helps children build resilience.
Enhances creativity and problem-solving – Open-ended natural materials invite imagination and flexible thinking.
Boosts memory and learning – Movement and sensory-rich experiences strengthen neural connections.
Promotes overall well-being – Fresh air, sunlight, and unstructured play support mood, sleep, and physical health.
What makes the nature school program different from a traditional preschool?
Our Nature School program is designed around how young children naturally learn—through movement, exploration, and real-world experiences.
Rather than focusing on worksheets or structured indoor activities, we support development through hands-on learning, meaningful conversation, and guided discovery in a small-group outdoor environment.
Children build strong foundations in focus, confidence, language, and social-emotional skills while developing a deep connection to the natural world.
What does a typical day at nature school look like?
Each day follows a gentle, predictable rhythm:
Arrival and free exploration
Morning circle
Guided nature walk and discovery
Snack and rest
Hands-on activity (art, sensory play, observation)
Closing circle
What happens in bad weather?
We embrace a wide range of weather conditions and believe children benefit from experiencing the outdoors in different seasons. That being said, our San Anselmo location offers an indoor alternative.
Families will always be notified in advance if cancellations are required.
Will nature school classes prepare my child for kindergarten?
Yes.
Children in our program develop the foundational skills that matter most for school readiness—strong language abilities, the ability to focus and follow directions, problem-solving skills, and social confidence.
Because learning is grounded in real experiences, these skills tend to be deeper and more lasting.
How do children learn academic skills like reading and math in the nature school program?
At this age, children learn best through real experiences.
We build early academic skills through:
Conversation, storytelling, and vocabulary (literacy)
Counting, sorting, and patterns in nature (math)
Observation and exploration (science)
This approach supports deeper understanding and long-term retention.
Is there structure, or is it all free play?
Our program balances child-led exploration with intentional guidance.
Each day includes a consistent rhythm, group time, and guided activities, while still allowing space for curiosity, creativity, and independent discovery.
What should my child wear?
Children should come dressed for outdoor play in all conditions.
We recommend:
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
Closed-toe shoes
Extra layers as needed
We’ll provide a detailed packing list upon enrollment.
What is your student-to-teacher ratio?
We can accommodate 8 children per day. We have a 1:4 teacher/student ratio.
This allows for:
Close supervision
Strong relationships
Individualized support
A calm, connected group dynamic
Is it safe for children to be outdoors for the entire class?
Yes. Safety is a top priority.
We maintain clear boundaries, close supervision, and age-appropriate expectations. Children are guided in safe exploration, including how to assess risks like climbing or uneven terrain.
Outdoor environments also tend to reduce the spread of illness and provide more space for movement and regulation.
Do children need to be potty trained?
All children in our nature school program and those attending our summer camps should be fully potty trained.
How do I know if the nature school program is the right fit?
Our program is a great fit for families who value:
Small-group learning
Time outdoors in all seasons
A calm, relationship-based environment
Learning through exploration and real experiences
If that resonates with you, we’d love to connect and learn more about your child.
