Tennessee Valley was originally inhabited by Coast Miwok tribes, as was much of Marin County. The valley was called Elk Valley by the first European settlers due to its abundant wildlife and presence of Tule elk. The valley's skies are home to many birds, including predatory raptors, swallows, and California quail. In late summer and early fall, hundreds of migrating shorebirds, terns, herons, and egrets can be seen. The valley's land is home to deer, coyotes, bobcats, bush rabbits, newts, and salamanders. The valley's stream nourishes many types of trees, including Monterey pines and eucalyptus.

"My child had so much fun at camp and can't wait to go back. She came home everyday and taught us about birds, deer and other nature facts with enthusiasm. They made lovely art projects like nature weavings and paintings."
